The First Wedding

Recently, some friends of mine got married. Since this was my only chance to test live illustration before attending the upcoming wedding fair, I decided to give them a special gift: During their aperitif, I created live fashion illustrations of their guests.

I had to make a few preparations beforehand: I finished drawing the illustration templates, cut the paper to size, designed a beautiful frame layout for the paper and had it printed. I also made sure my watercolors were nicely organized—and I needed to buy a new brush. Once everything was packed and ready, I set off to the wedding.

Unfortunately, it started to rain right after the ceremony. So the aperitif was spontaneously moved indoors. That meant I didn’t have a nice, spacious table, the lighting was quite dim, and the space around me was pretty tight. Still, I jumped right into drawing. I was so focused and busy sketching guests until they left that I didn’t really have time to take photos or film any content myself. Luckily, a friend of mine was there and captured a few moments on video. So if you’d like a closer look behind the scenes, feel free to check out the video!

Since it was a spontaneous decision to illustrate at this wedding, not everything was perfectly prepared. But I guess that was the whole point of this test run—I now know exactly what I still need to work on. Still, I managed to try everything out, and I realized that even under challenging conditions, it somehow still works.

I was really happy about the guests’ reactions—they were absolutely thrilled. Many were genuinely excited to take home a high-quality, hand-drawn fashion illustration of themselves.

Now I’m really looking forward to the next wedding—and I’m excited to see how many more will follow.
