The Logistics: How a Large-Scale Illustration Works

The most common question I get from bridal parties is: how can a large-scale illustration of the couple be finished in just one evening?

The answer is simple: I need time. Unlike my smaller guest portraits, a detailed watercolour of the couple takes between 5 and 8 hours to complete, depending on the size and level of detail required. To make the surprise work, I actually begin the process long before the couple or their guests even arrive at the evening venue.

For this specific wedding, I arrived three hours before the reception began. The event manager showed me to my designated table in the hall, which gave me the quiet space I needed to set up my station and start the piece.

Working Behind the Scenes

While I was setting up, the maid of honour sent over the reference photos via message. These showed the couple’s outfits, their desired pose, and the scenery they wanted. Having these details ready meant I could start sketching and painting the foundations immediately.

By the time the wedding party arrived for the reception, the sketch was finished and I was already working on the first layers of watercolour.

The Reveal and the Finished Piece

The bride and groom had no idea I was coming. Once the guests had settled in, the maid of honour introduced me to the couple and revealed the surprise.

Throughout the welcome drinks and the first courses, the illustration continued to take shape. It’s always a highlight for the guests to drift over between bites and watch the painting progress in real time. After the main course, the best man and maid of honour officially presented the finished piece to the couple.

Thanks to the bridal party's coordination, the newlyweds were able to take home a hand-drawn watercolour portrait of themselves, captured in their wedding outfits, the very same night.
