We usually write letters to our loved ones. We write postcards from far away. We use letters to congratulate them on birthdays, graduations, weddings or births. We show love, sympathy, pride or offer comfort. We encourage and support each other.
Writing a letter to yourself can feel very strange or unfamiliar at first. Perhaps the thought alone puts you off. But maybe it could also help you.
Writing a letter to yourself can be a great tool for self-growth, healing, reflection, calming down and building resilience. I’ve collected some ideas you could use as writing prompts.
1. a letter to your past self
Reflect on your journey and offer advice or encouragement to your past self during a challenging time.
2. a letter for facing a challenge
Write a letter to yourself to read when facing a difficult challenge, offering support, guidance, and motivation to persevere. Write down what you want to hold on to when you reach your limits. You can also include some verses which remind you of the God who is with you.
3. a letter for celebrating an achievement
Write a letter to your future self congratulating them on reaching a significant milestone or goal. Encourage them to take rest, celebrate, and find contentment in their accomplishments. Remind them to enjoy the fruits of their labor and indulge in moments of joy and relaxation.
4. a letter of forgiveness
Forgive yourself for past mistakes or shortcomings, offering self-compassion and understanding as you commit to moving forward with love and acceptance. You can also include a prayer for forgiveness for yourself.
5. a letter of gratitude
Express gratitude to yourself for your resilience, strength, and perseverance, celebrating your efforts and achievements along your journey. Or write down in general what you are grateful for, what you appreciate about your life. When the days are grey, read the letter in which you have captured the beauty of the everyday.
6. a self-reflection letter
Reflect on your personal growth and development over a specific period, considering how you’ve changed, what you’ve learned, and how you’ve overcome challenges.
7. a vision letter
Outline your vision for your ideal future self, describing the person you aspire to be, the goals you hope to achieve, and the values that will guide you.
8. a self-compassion letter
Practice self-compassion and kindness towards yourself, offering comfort and reassurance while affirming that it’s okay to be imperfect and make mistakes.
9. a letter of intentions
Declare your priorities, values, and goals, affirming your dedication to living a purposeful and meaningful life.
I hope these ideas inspire you. Maybe you have an idea of your own or something on your mind. I would like to encourage you to give it a try. You have nothing to lose ;)
Be blessed!
